If you haven't been to Boothbay Harbor during the holidays, it's time to experience the magic. The small coastal town dressed up for the holiday season evokes a wistful affection to the happy place of childhood memories, a sentimental longing to step back in time. It's a cheerful place where shop owners and restaurant staff are excited to greet you. Their warm hospitality will have you feeling like you are part of the family. At Sea Maine Vacation Rentals, this is one of our favorite times of the year in Boothbay Harbor and we would like to share all the happenings with you.
Several signature events anchor this so called off season. Certainly the big draw is Gardens Aglow at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. It's the largest light display in the state of Maine with over 500,000 LED lights. The breathtaking views paint a spectacular canvas that will delight your senses and call to your inner child. It opens on November 17 and continues through New Year's Eve. If you want to be one of the first to attend
the light festival, you will want to stay overnight so you don't miss Boothbay Harbor's Early Bird Sale which happens the next morning on November 18 bright and early at 5 am. All kinds of people show up in their pajamas, bathrobes, and slippers for the sales and giveaways. Over 50 businesses will be open and the overflowing excitement of the town will make you feel like you're in a holiday movie.
If that's not your cup of cocoa, then maybe you would like to plan your Maine vacation for the first weekend in December. You can start your Saturday at the great old Opera House in town for the Festival of Trees. There's no cost to attend and so much to see. If you want to get some shopping done, there will be gifts, greens, sweets, jewelry, home goods, and even a silent auction of the more than 60 decorated trees. Be careful not to lose track of time as you'll want to be at the Town Landing by 1:00 pm to see Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive by boat. After you
welcome them, take a ride on a horse drawn wagon or enjoy holiday performances on the Library lawn. At 5 pm, head back down by the water for a special treat as the Lighted Boat Parade illuminates the inner harbor. After that, you will definitely be ready for dinner and lucky for you, the town is ready to serve. It's a full day and you may find yourself dreaming about sugarplums, dancing moose, and waving lobsters too.
If you've got little ones, you might want to book your stay on a weekend from December 9 through the 23rd. That's when the North Pole Express pulls into town at the Boothbay Railway Village. You and your young ones can gather around the wood stove in the Train Station and write a letter to Santa. The train conductor will call "All Aboard" when its time to take the train to the North Pole. Get comfy as the steam train takes you through the winter wonderland and stops only when it sees Santa waiting to board. On the return trip, you will disembark for a storybook reading and head to the 1847 Town hall for hot chocolate and homemade cookies. Remember to check out the model trains while you are there. Reservations in advance are recommended. New this year is the Holiday Sparkle Fireworks. On Friday, December 8 at 6 pm, head to the harbor to catch the night sky being lit up with a festive fireworks display.
If holiday architecture made out of ginger is more your thing, then you will probably want to plan to visit
on December 16 for the annual Gingerbread Spectacular. There you can find all sorts of gingerbread houses, well structures actually, as there are a few cabins, castles, lighthouses and mythical formations thrown in the mix. From professional bakers to elementary builders, the competition is friendly and fun with prizes awarded for Most Ingredients Used, Best Landscaping, Most Obsessive Compulsive and more. Enjoy entertainment, cocoa, and a bake sale along with the magic of the season.
After all that sugar and spice, you will need a place to retire that is in keeping with the theme of this story. High Head is a perfect Maine vacation retreat. Its secluded location surrounded by trees with views of the ocean, and the warmth of a cozy fire provide the perfect backdrop for holiday memories. It's a log cabin filled with modern amenities, sleeps 8, is available as a 4 day rental or longer if you wish, and is incredibly priced at $285/night. It's a most enchanting time to experience all the charm that the Boothbay Harbor peninsula has to offer this holiday season. To learn more, visit us at Sea Maine Vacation Rentals.
